A comprehensive guide to creating a reef environment in the home aquarium.

Designed with the beginning hobbyist in mind, this richly illustrated reference introduces the hobby of marine aquariums in a practical way. Explaining the technology and terminology clearly, Greg Jennings relates the aquarium setting to that of the natural saltwater environment and offers fascinating insights into the biology and the behavior of the most popular marine fish.

Over 150 species of reef fish, invertebrates and algae are described: their distribution in the wild, size, behavior, diet, aquarium requirements and compatibility. A large, full color photograph appears for each featured species, with personal recommendations on the fish considered best for the beginner.

The New Encyclopedia of the Saltwater Aquarium covers:

  • The natural history of saltwater fish
  • The pros and cons of the latest in equipment and technology
  • Saltwater aquarium setup and maintenance - starting out, water quality and temperature, tank decor, lighting and filters
  • Feeding, general care and health matters
  • An extensive illustrated selection of saltwater fish, invertebrates and algae.

A glossary, suggestions for further reading and a list of useful websites round out this complete reference.

2Mediocre!  Oct 08, 2009 By Steven Jones "sixerjones"
Just got done selling it to a local bookstore...It's brief aquarium in the setup dept. and the fish description is jumbled together with a mish mash of pics that don't pertain to the listed fish! If you want a half way decent fish description book it's ok but when it comes to aquarium setup and operation pass on this one....the Dakin book and Fenner book are still the best!

4Its a solid book for the price  Nov 06, 2009 By Andrea Delsignore
if your looking for an a to z aquarium setup book its not the right one, its a good species book to learn about our marine fish friends, but again not a dictionary of photos, loaded with a lot of pics but not every species has a pic. For those who want to lear a little more about aquarium keeping but arent looking for a step by step guide and would also like to learn more about a ton of species of fish, its a solid book. Combine it with J.C. Delbeck and J. Sprung "The Reef Aquarium Volume 3" and i dont think youll need another book.

5Excellent book  Feb 04, 2012 By Steve
I have a 300 gallon reef tank with many fish and corals. I got this book to increase my knowledge and ability to properly care for my fish. Its well written and did the job.
