For some, Folly Beach is a memory of youthful days of freedom; for others it is where the avant-garde, bohemian types lived. Having hosted plague victims, playwrights and maybe a pirate or two, Folly has had a checkered past. Folly Beach today is a locale for upscale homes and condominiums, but in spite of this shift from a blue-collar retreat to a chic destination, Folly has remained Charleston’s wild cousin. In this updated and expanded version of her Time and Tide on Folly Beach, Folly native Gretchen Stringer-Robinson takes the reader through the war years, the innocence of the fifties, the recession of the seventies, Hurricane Hugo and the times in between. Join Gretchen as she introduces the characters and revisits the places that have made Folly Beach a unique haven on the Carolina coast. | | | |

A History Book That's Fun to Read! Oct 26, 2011
By Bill Noel
"Author of FOLLY, THE PIER, WASHOUT, THE EDGE, and THE MARSH"
Gretchen does a fantastic job of capturing the history of charming, quirky, and memorable Folly Beach, South Carolina. The book covers the milestones in the history of the island, brings the personality of the historic figures to the surface, and is a pleasant read. I would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more about the history of Folly Beach or is planning a stay of any length on the small island.

Stringer-Robinson's "Folly Beach" May 31, 2006
By Melissa Jones I really loved reading Stringer-Robinson's book on Folly Beach. Having attended school in Charleston, I had been to Folly Beach numerous times with friends to enjoy the laid-back beach and people. Not knowing much more about Folly than its being a good place to get a tan with friends, I learned tons of interesting facts and stories about it's rich past, including some shady characters such as pirates... Very cute and informative work!
